Projects we've contributed to

Hawaii Mauna Kea Project

One Tree Planted’s Goal: Planting 30,000 trees in the Hāmākua Restoration Area
The purpose of this project is to facilitate and accelerate forest recovery that will effectively mitigate threats of wildfire and alien weeds to secure suitable recovery habitat for endangered birds, the endangered Hawaiian Hoary Bat, and dozens of plants and invertebrates listed as candidates or species of concern.

Creek Fire Restoration

One Tree Planted’s Goal: Planting 220,000 trees surrounding Shaver Lake
The Creek Fire of 2020 burned over 3,000 acres surrounding Shaver Lake, California. This project is aimed at reforestation, which will allow for the retention of soils, reducing erosion, preventing type conversion, and encouraging positive water movement, which all in turn helps to sustain the ecosystems of the area.

Susanville Family Lands Replanting Project

One Tree Planted’s Goal: Planting 300,000 trees in Lassen County
This project will restore and replant over 1,200 acres of California forest that was burned in the Sheep Fire in Lassen County. Bringing a range of social and environmental benefits to the local area and community as well as California as a whole, this project will help reduce post fire erosion, enhance water quality and quantity, as well as improve wildlife habitat.

Rim Wildlife Restoration Project

One Tree Planted’s Goal: Planting 627,000 trees in Tuolumne County, Stanislaus National Forest
This project is designed to restore landscape mosaics of both old Forest structure and Open Canopy structure within the footprint of the 2013 Rim Fire. By increasing resiliency for wildlife and plant species, this project will restore a healthy landscape, enhance connectivity across the landscape, create links and nodes across the Tuolumne Watershed, will provide thermal cover, structure, and habitat for native species, and will filter precipitation and control runoff, ensuring the continued existence of this landscape.

North Santiam Replanting Project

One Tree Planted’s Goal: Planting 134,800 trees in the Beachie Creek & Lionshead Wildfire Perimeter
The North Santiam Watershed is the drinking water source for 8 communities including Salem, the second largest city in Oregon. The September 2020 wildfires devastated this area, impacting 40% of the watershed basin. Replanting will help stabilize the soils preventing future stream and river sedimentation. It will also give the community a sense of hope - seeing the burned landscapes recover and not become large plots of invasive scotch broom and blackberry.

Chester Reforestation Project

One Tree Planted’s Goal: Planting 80,000 trees
After the Dixie Fire, the second largest fire recorded in California history, the city of Chester found its forests decimated. The reforestation of this area will provide vegetation to prevent type-conversion to chaparral and invasive species. Erosion control is also a principal concern.Reforestation acts a beacon of hope for many of the residence who are struggling to rebuild. The labor will lead to a spike in local spending through lodging and food that will directly benefit struggling business as the regular seasonal tourism is completely gone.

Tennent Fire Recovery Project

One Tree Planted’s Goal: Planting 80,000 trees
Planting this area in California will help ensure higher survival rates in a notoriously difficult area to plant due to dry conditions and brush. This will speed along forest recovery in an area that has been completely devastated by wildfire, which has led to large patches of complete forest mortality. This fire scar is up against a previous fire scar, leaving much of the local landscape without seed sources capable of producing natural regeneration and recovery.

Minnesota Chippewa National Forest Reforestation Project

One Tree Planted’s Goal: Planting 800,000 trees to Restore Chippewa National Forest
Covering over 600,000 acres, the Chippewa National Forest contains over 1,000 lakes, wetlands, and wide variety of wildlife. This project will help to restore forests lost through wind damage, insect infestation, and other forms of degradation. This project will focus on replanting Red, White, and Jack Pine, Red Oak, and other native species to the region.

New Brunswick Chignecto Isthmus Restoration Project

One Tree Planted’s Goal: Planting 150,000 trees in the Chignecto Isthmus
The Chignecto Isthmus connects mainland New Brunswick to Nova Scotia, which is hugely important for the native habitat, and has been identified as a priority conservation area. Unfortunately, forests in this area have become fragmented. By planting native Acadian trees, we will be able to promote wildlife connectivity, water retention and carbon storage, among other benefits for years to come.

California Sawmill Liebre Reforestation Project

One Tree Planted’s Goal: Planting 59,500 trees in Angeles National Forest
The Powerhouse Fire in 2013 burned over 30,000 acres within the Angeles National Forest. By planting trees in the Sawmill Liebre Area, we can work to restore fire-degraded land, protect biodiversity and water quality, and create resilience against future wildfires.

California Cranston Fire Reforestation Project

One Tree Planted’s Goal: Planting 218,358 trees in San Bernardino National Forest
The Cranston Fire in 2018 burned over 13,000 acres within the National Forest. Due to forest cover loss, the burnt areas have a high risk of flash floods and erosion, creating hazardous conditions within the landscape. By planting trees in the affected areas, we are working to re-establish forest cover, increase biodiversity, improve watershed health, and prevent catastrophic erosion events.

Trees and Deforestation

Trees play an important role in the water cycle, grounding the water in their roots and releasing it into the atmosphere. Here are some interesting facts about trees and the impact of deforestation around the world.
Learn more at onetreeplanted.org.

• Up to 48lbs. of CO2 is sequestered by a mature tree every year.
• 1.6 billion people rely on forests for their livelihoods.
• 80,000 acres of forests disappear from the Earth every day!
• 15% of all greenhouse gas emissions are the result of deforestation.
• 28,000 species are expected to become extinct by the next 25 years due to deforestation.
• Deforestation comes in many forms, including fires, clear-cutting for agriculture, ranching and development, unsustainable logging for timber, and degradation due to climate change.
